Ever feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day? You’re not alone, especially if you’re one of the many Americans working a side hustle. In June, a Wall Street Journal article found that more Americans are juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. The article written by Callum Borchers shared that over the last five months of 2025, the number of Americans working multiple jobs rose to between 5.3% and 5.5%.
This is a range that hasn’t been seen since 2000-2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These numbers also give rise to a word Americans and economists have been dancing around for some time – recession. It’s a word no one wants to hear or to contemplate its repercussions, but the rise in Americans working multiple jobs points to some level of collective unease when it comes to the economy.
Younger Impact
Research from Deloitte found that younger generations (Millennials and Gen Z) are strong participants in the side gig economy. In fact, the number of Millennials working two jobs has still been steady for several years, according to Elizabeth Faber, Global Chief People and Purpose Officer, Deloitte.
None of this is news to Millennials who walked into a tough job market as new graduates. Despite job advancement over the years, Millennials still haven’t ended the need to work multiple jobs.
Unanticipated Loss of Jobs
In June, a monthly employment report from payroll provider ADP also reported a loss of an estimated 33,000 jobs. This was not the net gain of jobs expected by economists and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“Though layoffs continue to be rare, a hesitancy to hire and a reluctance to replace departing workers led to job losses last month,” said Nela Richardson, Chief Economist, ADP in a statement. “Still, the slowdown in hiring has yet to disrupt pay growth.”
