The Class of 2025 is facing a challenging job market, but they are also coming up with a truly clear list of what they will and will not accept from employers. Such disruption from a new generation of workers is nothing new and there’s already been significant speculation about how this generation of workers could introduce sweeping changes into the workforce.
But to be fair, the job market is undeniably challenging for job candidates of all ages and demographics. The rules of the job search continue to change, and increased use of artificial intelligence by both recruiters and job candidates makes it difficult to know what constitutes an effective job search except, one that will land a job.
Changes Ahead
Yet optimism is running high among graduates. A 2025 State of the Graduate Report from Monster found 83% of those surveyed were confident in finding a job shortly after graduation. Others (37%) predict a new job within four to six months of graduation. Only 5% think it could take a year or more to find a job.
But many acknowledge they might not land a dream job in alignment with their degree. 48% of the 2025 graduates surveyed think they will not be able to find a role at a preferred organization. Nevertheless there are a number of new grads who are confident their skills prepare them for an entry-level job, while 20% said they were overqualified for an entry-level role.
Tempering expectations could be a good idea when there are people who are not just highly educated but have built careers and have a trusted resume of previous experience who are finding it hard to find a job, said Emily Levine, Executive Vice President, Career Group Companies, a recruitment firm.
“If you want to get a job somewhat quickly and start contributing and earning money, it most likely won’t be your dream job,” she continued. “And that’s okay.”
