It Might be a Tricky Job Market for New Graduates

New graduates are entering into a particularly tricky job market and competition will likely be tough. Survey research conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) asked recruiters what they were looking for on the resumes of Class of 2025 graduates.

At the top of the list: evidence of the ability to solve problems (90%) and strong networking skills, including the ability to work as part of a team (80%). A large number of recruiters are also looking for effective communication skills. Initiative, a strong work ethic and technical skills (70%) were also on the wish list of many recruiters.

Less Emphasis on GPA

These ‘softer’ skills are beginning to eclipse the importance of a strong GPA, because these skills are needed in every job – regardless of the industry, said Shawn Van Derziel, NACE President and CEO. Interestingly, while it’s still helpful to have a degree, the type of college degree is becoming less important than in the past.

As the popularity of skills-based hiring continues to grow, NACE says it will be important for candidates to show a range of soft skills. But these skills are often less straightforward than grades or GPA and can be difficult to highlight, particularly for those just entering the job market. NACE recommends students show these skills by sharing examples from their classroom work, campus programming, internships and earlier work experiences. Internships, especially paid internships, are a wonderful way for students to gain a combination of work-related experiences and work skills.

“It’s critical for students to showcase these skills on their resume so they can get to the next stage, the interview, where they will have to convince employers, they have what it takes,” Van Derziel said.

Hiring on the Rise

Having these guidelines is important considering more employers plan to hire more Class of 2025 graduates than they hired Class of 2024 graduates. Reasons for increasing the number of new hires include succession planning and keeping the talent pipeline, company growth, increase in demand for products and services, and an increase in the number of retirements.
