Finding Your “Why” Takes Time and Self-Reflection

  • Post author:

Ever wonder why you do the things you do? Do you know why some things become a priority and why other things fall by the wayside?

The why is more than a question. It’s a catalyst. The why asks the question “Am I living my best life?”. The why also helps you figure out if your time and energy are being best spent on the things most important to you.

Over the past two years I’ve found the reasons for my why blurring, leaving a feeling a disconnection between what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. During these moments, answering the call of the why often felt too big, too overwhelming, and too out of reach when so many things in life felt out of control.

Now I find that the call of the why never leaves us. It just rests, waiting for a time when we’re ready to answer the call.

Questions to Find the Why

Personal Questions:

  • Are you doing things that are good for your health, i.e., working out, cooking healthy meals, etc.
  • Do you engage in activities that make you happy?
  • Do you spend time doing things that don’t make you happy? And why?

Family and Belief Questions:

  • Are you spending quality time with your family?
  • Are you giving time to your faith/beliefs?
  • Are you present when you are at home?

Work Questions:

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • What do you love about your job?
  • What do you dislike about your job?

Self-Reflection

These are rarely easy questions to answer and while some of these answers may come quickly, others will take time. Let the answers come from within and know that all answers sought will be deeply personal. This is not the time to solicit another’s opinion. Only those answers coming from within will be the right answers for you.

Once you have a chance to realign with your why, you can begin making changes to find new ways to live your best life. You never know, this inquiry could be the beginning of a new career or the discovery of a new passion.
